First birthday party ideas
A first birthday party is mostly for the adults, and that is fine. The baby will not remember it, so the job is a nice hour or two, a few good photos, and getting everyone home before the nap collapses.
Keep it short, keep it local, and resist the urge to build a soft play centre in your living room. Here is the plan we would use.
First birthday cards and banners

The timing that actually works
- Two hours, no more. Somewhere between 10am and 12pm, or 2pm to 4pm, depending on when your baby naps.
- Start after the morning nap so the birthday child is awake for the cake rather than asleep on somebody's shoulder.
- Cake at the 45-minute mark, not the end. Everyone gets the photo before the meltdown.
- Tell guests the finish time on the invite. First birthdays that drift past three hours end badly for everyone.
Food that survives a one year old
- Buffet for the adults, finger food for the babies: cheese cubes, cucumber sticks, banana, breadsticks, plain pasta.
- One cake for photos and a separate tray bake for actual eating. Smash cakes look great and feed nobody.
- Label anything with nuts, egg or dairy - at least one guest will be checking.
- Skip juice. Water and milk save you three changes of clothes.
Simple themes that photograph well
- One colour plus white. Cheaper than a licensed theme and it looks better in pictures.
- A number one balloon and a banner is genuinely enough decoration for a front room.
- A height chart or handprint sheet as the keepsake, done early before the icing arrives.
- Farm animals, jungle, rainbow or 'one-derful' - all cheap to do with plain plates and a banner.
What it costs in the UK
- At home for 15 guests: roughly 80 to 150 pounds all in, mostly food and decorations.
- Village or church hall hire: 15 to 40 pounds an hour in most of the UK, more in London.
- Soft play party packages: typically 12 to 20 pounds per child, usually with a minimum of 10.
- Cake: 25 to 60 pounds from a local baker, or about 10 pounds if you make it.

How many people should you invite to a first birthday?
Whoever the baby actually sees regularly - usually grandparents, a couple of close friends and their children. Ten to twenty people is plenty at home.
Do you give party bags at a first birthday?
Not really needed at one. If you want to, a piece of fruit and a bubble pot per child is enough and costs about a pound each.
