How to Start a Daily Mindfulness Routine: A Beginner's Guide
Share
Mindfulness sounds like it needs a retreat and an hour of silence. It doesn't. Five minutes a day, done consistently, is enough to start noticing a difference.
Here's a beginner's routine, a few easy exercises, and how to make it a habit you'll keep.
Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty isn't one of our products - it's a book we think fits well here, sold by an outside retailer.

A five-minute daily routine
- Pick a fixed time - straight after your morning brew works well.
- Sit comfortably and set a timer for five minutes.
- Breathe normally and notice the feeling of each breath in and out.
- When your mind wanders (it will), notice it and gently come back to the breath.
- Finish by naming one thing you're grateful for today.
- Tick it off on a habit tracker so you can see your streak build.
Easy exercises to try
- Box breathing: in for four, hold for four, out for four, hold for four.
- The 5-4-3-2-1 check: five things you see, four you hear, three you can touch, two you smell, one you taste.
- Mindful brew: drink one cup of tea with no phone, just noticing it.
- A mindful walk: ten minutes, no headphones, paying attention to what's around you.
Making it stick
- Keep a habit tracker print somewhere you'll see it every day, like the fridge or your desk.
- Start smaller than you think - two minutes is fine.
- Read a little alongside it: Think Like a Monk has simple breathing and reflection exercises written for everyday people, not monks.
- Don't restart from zero if you miss a day - just carry on tomorrow.
