The rule most people don't know: police and armed forces uniforms are refused by plenty of UK venues, and impersonating a police officer is a genuine offence rather than a bouncer's opinion.

• Lifeguard. Red shorts and vest, whistle, float. It's the easiest one to wear all night, nobody objects to it, and everyone gets it immediately.

• Paramedic or first aider in green with a kit bag.
• Mountain rescue or RNLI-style crew: waterproofs, life jacket, rope.
• Coastguard, ski patrol, ranger - same energy, less common at a party.
• Vet or nurse, if you want the uniform theme without the emergency.

Check before you commit

• Police uniforms: several venues refuse them outright, and passing yourself off as an officer is an offence.
• Armed forces uniforms: the same door policy applies in a lot of places.
• Anything with a working siren or flashing blue light, which gets confiscated.
• Handcuffs, batons or anything weapon-shaped, real or plastic.
• Ring the venue if you're a group. Every doorman would rather answer the phone than have an argument at eleven.
