A good theme is one where nobody has to buy anything. If half your guests can put it together from a wardrobe and a charity shop, they'll all turn up in costume.

• One film, whole cast - everyone claims a character in the group chat.
• Superheroes and villains, split the room in two.
• Cartoon characters: cheap, bright and instantly recognisable.
• Spy night: black tie, martinis, one fake briefcase.
• Wizarding: house colours, candles and a lot of black.
• Sitcom characters, judged on accuracy rather than effort.

Funny and low-effort themes

• Bad taste: charity shop only, worst outfit wins.
• Anything but clothes: cardboard, bin bags, tablecloths.
• Come as your job, but zombie.
• Letter of the alphabet: everyone picks one and interprets it.
