How To Style A Festive Over-Table Christmas Branch

A bare branch suspended over the dining table, dressed with a few lightweight decorations, has quietly become the most-copied Christmas look in the UK - it costs almost nothing and clears the table completely.

The whole thing hinges on two boring details: what you fix it to, and how high you hang it.

Honest note: we make cards, pin badges, prints and party decorations, not branches or paper star lanterns.

Choosing the branch

  • Silver birch is the classic - pale bark, good side shoots, light for its size.
  • Length: roughly two thirds of the table's length, so it doesn't overhang the ends.
  • Pick something with a reasonably straight main stem or it will never hang level.
  • Dry it indoors for a week before hanging - fresh wood is far heavier.
  • Wipe it down and, if you like, give it a coat of matt white paint.

Fixing it to the ceiling safely

  • Find the joists with a stud detector - screw hooks into a joist, not into plasterboard alone.
  • Two fixings, about a third in from each end of the branch, so it hangs level.
  • If you can only reach plasterboard, use proper plasterboard toggle fixings rated well above the weight.
  • Weigh the dressed branch first on bathroom scales and treat that as your minimum rating.
  • Renting? Hang it from a curtain pole across an alcove, or from two existing picture hooks, instead of drilling.
  • Marking-free fixings - Read the guide

Getting the height right

  • The lowest decoration wants to sit about 75cm above the table top.
  • Sit down and check the eyeline across the table before you finish - you should see the person opposite.
  • Level the branch with adjustable knots rather than trying to cut it straight.
  • Natural jute twine or clear nylon, depending on whether you want the hanging to show.

Dressing it without overloading it

  • Paper star lanterns are ideal here: large, light and safe directly over food.
  • Three to five decorations at staggered drops, never a row at one height.
  • Add foliage - eucalyptus or spruce - wired along the main stem.
  • Battery LED wire lights wound along the branch, switch end hidden near a fixing.
  • No glass, no heavy ceramics and no real candles over a table where people are sitting.

Taking it down and reusing it

  • Undress it before you unhook it, or you'll drop something.
  • Leave the ceiling hooks in and paint them out - they take a plant or a lantern the rest of the year.
  • The same branch does spring with paper blossom and eggs.
  • Store it flat above a wardrobe rather than in a damp shed.

How to write it so it lands

Frequently asked questions

How do you hang a branch over a dining table?

Two ceiling hooks screwed into joists, a third in from each end of the branch, with jute twine or clear nylon. Weigh the dressed branch first and make sure the fixings are rated above it.

How high should decorations hang above a dining table?

The lowest point wants about 75cm of clearance above the table top. Sit down and check you can see the person opposite before you finish.

Can you hang a Christmas branch in a rented flat?

Yes - hang it from a curtain pole across an alcove or from existing picture hooks rather than drilling. Adhesive ceiling hooks work for very light branches only.

What decorations are safe to hang over a table?

Lightweight paper stars, foliage and battery LED wire lights. Avoid glass baubles, heavy ceramics and anything with a real flame directly above where people sit.

Where do you get a birch branch in the UK?

Florists and garden centres sell them from late November, and many tree surgeons give offcuts away. Dry it indoors for a week before hanging so it's lighter.

Do you sell paper star lanterns?

No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges, prints and party decorations in the UK. Paper stars and lights are recommendations from elsewhere - the only things linked to our own shop are ours.
