How To Plan A Romantic Stargazing Date Night In The UK
Share
Stargazing is the rare romantic plan that costs nothing, can't be booked out, and genuinely impresses - as long as you get two things right: a properly dark sky and enough layers.
The UK has some of the best protected dark skies in Europe, and most people live within two hours of one.
Honest note: we make cards, pin badges, prints and party decorations. Star maps and telescopes are recommendations from elsewhere.

Where to go: UK dark sky reserves
- Northumberland International Dark Sky Park - the largest protected sky in Europe, and the easiest win in England.
- Exmoor and Bodmin Moor for the South West, both with marked stargazing car parks.
- Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia for Wales; Elan Valley if you want almost nobody there.
- Galloway Forest Park, the Cairngorms and the Isle of Coll for Scotland.
- Kielder, Grizedale and the South Downs have dedicated observatories if you'd rather someone else pointed things out.
Picking the night
- Go within a few days of a new moon - a full moon washes out everything except the brightest stars.
- October to March gives the longest dark and the clearest air; you don't have to wait until 11pm.
- Check the forecast for cloud cover specifically, not rain - a dry cloudy night is useless.
- Allow 20 minutes outside for your eyes to adjust, and don't check your phone during it.
- Use a red torch, or red cellophane over a normal one, so you keep your night vision.
What to pack
- Twice the layers you think - standing still in a field at 2C is a different sport to walking.
- A roll mat or two camping chairs, because craning your neck upright gets old in ten minutes.
- A flask of something hot, and food you can eat with gloves on.
- A free star chart app with a night mode, held low so it doesn't blind you both.
- Binoculars beat a cheap telescope every single time for a first go.
Making a night of it
- Aim for a meteor shower if you can - the Perseids in August and the Geminids in December are the reliable two.
- Learn three things before you go: Orion, the Plough and how to find the North Star from it. That's plenty to talk about.
- Park facing the view so you can retreat to the car and still see the sky.
- Write the date and the place down. It's the detail you'll want later.
- A custom star map print of the exact date and coordinates turns the night into something on the wall - Take a look

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best stargazing in the UK?
Northumberland International Dark Sky Park has the darkest protected sky in Europe. Galloway Forest, Exmoor, Bodmin Moor, the Brecon Beacons and the Cairngorms are all officially designated and well signposted.
What is the best month for stargazing in the UK?
October to March. The nights are long and genuinely dark by 7pm, and cold air is usually clearer. August is worth it for the Perseid meteor shower despite the short nights.
Do you need a telescope to go stargazing?
No. A pair of 10x50 binoculars shows you the moon's craters, Jupiter's moons and star clusters, and they're far easier to use in the dark than a budget telescope.
How cold does it get stargazing at night?
Colder than the forecast suggests, because you're standing still in an open field. Assume five degrees below whatever your phone says and take a blanket on top of your coat.
What can you do to remember a stargazing date?
Note the exact date, time and location. A custom star map print reproduces the sky from those coordinates, which makes a much better keepsake than a photo of the dark.
Do you sell star maps?
No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges, prints and party decorations in the UK. Star map prints are a recommendation from elsewhere - the only things linked to our own shop are ours.
