Easy Village Hall Party Decoration Ideas That Look Expensive

Village halls have the same three problems everywhere: a ceiling too high, lighting too bright and walls the colour of porridge.

Fix the light first and the rest gets easier - most people decorate the walls and wonder why it still feels like a committee meeting.

Fix the lighting first

• Turn off half the strip lights if the switches allow it, and check that before you book anything else.
• Bring four or five table lamps or battery lanterns; low light at table height changes the room completely.
• Battery fairy lights along the window sills and around the serving hatch.
• Warm white only, around 2700K. Cool white makes everyone look ill.
• Uplighters in the corners if the hall or a local hire firm has them.

Making a big room feel full

• Shrink the space: use half the hall, block the rest with the buffet tables and a row of chairs.
• Hang decorations at head height, not near the ceiling - nobody looks up at a 5 metre ceiling.
• One long bunting run across the width does more than scattered bits everywhere.
• Create a focal wall: a pre-strung gold banner behind the cake or buffet table where photos happen.
• Round tables in a cluster rather than long rows against the walls.

Cheap things that look expensive

• Plain kraft paper table runners with tealights and greenery down the middle - about GBP 2 a table.
• Supermarket flowers split between six jam jars instead of one big arrangement.
• Gold or metallic decorations catch the light and photograph as more expensive than they are.
• Matching napkins in one colour, which costs nothing extra but makes the tables look planned.
• One good balloon arch at the door and nothing else in the entrance.

Working with the hire terms

• Check your hire slot includes setup and clear-up - most village halls charge from the hour you get the key.
• Ask what's allowed on the walls; many halls ban tape and pins but have picture rails or hooks already.
• Find out whether candles are permitted at all - plenty of halls say battery only.
• Confirm bin arrangements: you often have to take all rubbish away with you.
• Photograph the hall as you found it, so there's no argument about the deposit.
