Wedding Gift Etiquette: The Awkward Money Questions
Share
We make cards, pin badges and prints in the UK - we don't sell toasters, so nothing below is us pushing a gift list. It is what UK couples actually ask for, plus the card that goes with it.
Wedding gift etiquette in the UK is far more relaxed than it looks from the outside. Almost every anxious question has the same answer: give what you can afford, on time, with a card.
Here are the ones people actually lose sleep over.
Finish it with a card
Cash, contribution or a boxed gift - all of it lands better in a proper card.

Money questions
- Giving cash is normal and expected. Put it in a card rather than an envelope on the day.
- You do not need to cover the cost of your plate. That American rule has never been UK etiquette.
- A plus one does not double the gift. One gift per invitation is fine, though couples often give a bit more.
- Evening guests give less - £20 to £30 with a card - and nobody counts.
Awkward situations
- Destination wedding: your flights and accommodation are the gift. A card and something small is plenty.
- Second marriage: the same rules apply, though couples often ask for donations or experiences rather than homeware.
- Invited but can't go: send a card, and a small gift if you're close. There is no obligation.
- Money is tight: write the best card at that wedding and let that be your gift. Say nothing about the budget.
Timing and delivery
- Before the day is best - deliver to their home rather than the venue.
- Traditional etiquette allows up to a year after the wedding, but a month is a kinder target.
- Put your name in the card, not just on the parcel. Cards and gifts get separated at the venue.
- Keep the receipt out of the box but note where it is, in case of duplicates.
How to write it so it lands
- One invitation, one gift.
- Flights count as the gift at a destination wedding.
- Sign the card as well as the parcel.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have to cover your plate at a UK wedding?
No. Covering the cost of your meal is an American convention. In the UK you give what suits your budget and relationship to the couple.
Is it rude to give money as a wedding gift?
Not at all - most UK couples now prefer it. Present it in a card with a handwritten line so it doesn't feel transactional.
Do evening guests bring a gift?
A card is essential, a gift is optional. £20 to £30 is a common evening-guest gift.
How long do I have to send a wedding gift?
Traditionally up to a year, but aim for before the day or within the first month afterwards.
