• Feed people within an hour of arriving. Nobody has eaten since breakfast.
• Give grandparents an early exit plan; a taxi booked in advance saves the awkward hovering.

Food that feeds a crowd

• Buffet trays, a big pan of something, and bread. Cheap, easy and endlessly toppable.
• One hot thing keeps a party going far longer than crisps and dips alone.
• A cake with the subject or the university on it, cut when the speeches happen.
