How To Document Your Baby's First Year: Easy Keepsake Ideas
Share
Most baby journals stop somewhere around week five. That isn't a failure of willpower - it's a system that asks a page of writing from someone who hasn't slept.
These are the methods that survive a real first year, in roughly the order of least effort.

The low-effort methods that actually last
- A monthly photo with a milestone card in it. Twelve pictures, five minutes each, and the whole year is dated and labelled without a word written.
- A one-line-a-day book. A single sentence is achievable at 11pm; a page isn't.
- Voice notes to yourself. Thirty seconds in the car says more than a paragraph ever will.
- A shared photo album with the grandparents, which doubles as the backup.
- A note on your phone called 'things they did', added to whenever something makes you laugh.
- A yearly photo book, ordered from the same album each birthday.
What's worth recording
- First smile, first laugh, first roll, first tooth - dates only, not descriptions.
- First word, and what they actually meant by it.
- Weight and length at each check, all in one place.
- The songs that calmed them and the ones that didn't.
- Who visited in the first fortnight.
- What they were like, in one honest sentence a month. That's the bit you'll reread.
Ideas beyond photos
- A handprint or footprint each season, all on one sheet.
- A hospital tag, first hat and a hair clipping kept in one flat box.
- A letter written to them on each birthday, sealed and stacked.
- A short video on the same day each month, ten seconds long, edited into one film at the end.
- A jar of small notes the family drop in through the year, read on the first birthday.
Making it stick
- Pick two methods. Three is where it collapses.
- Put a recurring reminder on the same date each month.
- Keep everything in one place - one album, one box, one note.
- Back it up automatically. A lost phone is how most first years disappear.
- Forgive gaps. A record with holes in it beats no record.

How to write it so it lands
- Two methods maximum, chosen in week one.
- A monthly calendar reminder does more than any amount of good intention.
- Print something. Screens get lost; a book on a shelf doesn't.

Frequently asked questions
How do you record baby milestones without a journal?
Take one monthly photo with a milestone card in it, keep a one-line-a-day book, send yourself voice notes and store everything in a single shared album. Two methods, a monthly reminder, done.
What baby milestones should you write down?
First smile, laugh, roll, tooth, crawl, word and step, plus weight and length at each check and one honest sentence a month about what they were like.
What are baby milestone cards used for?
You lay one beside the baby in a monthly photo so the picture labels itself - month, age or achievement - which saves you writing anything down at all.
How do you make a first-year photo book?
Keep one shared album all year, pick your favourite two or three photos per month, and order a book near the first birthday. Twelve monthly shots make the spine of it.
Do you sell baby milestone cards?
No. We design and print greeting cards, enamel pin badges, prints and party decorations, all posted from the UK. Milestone card packs and anything else mentioned here are outside recommendations, not things we stock.
