How To Build A Calming Morning Routine Before Work

If mornings are a rush of snoozing, scrolling and running for the train, you start the day already stressed. A short, simple routine makes a real difference.

You don't need a 5am start. Twenty calm minutes is enough.

The 6-Minute Diary isn't one of our products. It's a gratitude journal we recommend, sold by an outside retailer.

The night before

  • Lay out clothes and pack your bag.
  • Put your phone on charge outside the bedroom.
  • Set one alarm, not five.

A 20-minute morning

  • Get up and open the curtains straight away.
  • Drink a glass of water, then put the kettle on.
  • Spend five minutes with a cup of tea and the morning page of the 6-Minute Diary: three things you're grateful for and what would make today good.
  • Do a short stretch or a walk round the block.
  • Check emails only once you're on your way, not in bed.

Make it stick

  • Start with one habit and add more later.
  • Keep the same order every day.
  • Don't give up if you miss a day. Just start again tomorrow.

How to write it so it lands

  • Keep your journal next to the kettle.
  • Go to bed at the same time each night so mornings are easier.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a morning routine?

Prepare the night before, keep your phone out of reach, and start with one or two small habits you'll actually do.

How long should a morning routine be?

Even 15 to 20 minutes is enough to feel calmer before work.

What is a good example of how to build a calming morning routine before work?

"Lay out clothes and pack your bag." is one of 11 examples on this page. Pick the one closest to the tone you want, then add a specific detail of your own - a shared memory, a date, a name - so it reads as yours rather than copied.

Can I copy these messages word for word?

Yes. Everything on this page is free to copy, print and read out - no permission or credit needed. Changing one detail so it fits the person is all we would suggest.
