The Ultimate Marathon Recovery Gift Guide For UK Runners

Everyone buys the runner something before the marathon. Almost nobody buys them anything for the four days afterwards, which is when they cannot get down the stairs forwards.

Post-race recovery is legs, sleep and food. Calves and hamstrings take the worst of a road marathon, quads take the worst of a hilly one, and everything hurts descending stairs.

Honest note: recovery gadgets and kit here are recommendations from elsewhere. We make cards, badges, prints and party decorations in the UK.

Recovery tools that get used in race week

  • A massage gun with infrared heating - the heat modes are the bit that helps on tight calves and hamstrings, where a cold percussion head alone is unpleasant.
  • Compression socks for the flight or train home and the next two evenings.
  • A foam roller for quads and IT bands, which a gun cannot cover as broadly.
  • A massage ball for the feet, which people forget entirely after 26.2 miles.
  • A voucher for a sports massage the following week, not the same day.

Comfort for the days after

  • Loose joggers and slip-on shoes - bending to do laces is genuinely hard on day two.
  • Epsom salts for a long bath.
  • A proper flask for the walk they will insist on taking too early.
  • Blister plasters and toenail realism, which they will thank you for privately.
  • Good coffee and something they were not allowed in the taper.

Keepsakes for the finish

  • A frame for the medal and bib together.
  • A print of the route or the finishing time - Shop the range
  • A pin badge for the kit bag - Shop the range
  • A card with the time written in it, so they have it in their own handwriting one day - Shop the range
  • A photo from the course, printed, rather than the official ones nobody buys.

How to actually recover, in order

  • Day one: walk gently, eat, drink, sleep. No stretching into pain.
  • Day two and three: heat, light massage, short flat walks. This is when a heated gun earns itself.
  • Day four onwards: swim or cycle before running again.
  • Two weeks minimum before a hard session, whatever they tell you.
  • Do not buy them a race entry as a gift in the first week. Wait until they bring it up.

How to write it so it lands

  • Buy for the week after, not race day.
  • Heat helps calves more than cold.
  • Frame the medal and bib together.

Frequently asked questions

What are good marathon recovery gifts?

A heated massage gun, compression socks, a foam roller, a massage ball for the feet, Epsom salts, and a sports massage voucher for the week after rather than race day itself.

What should you buy a runner after a marathon?

Something for the four days afterwards: recovery tools, comfortable clothes, good food, and a frame for the medal and bib.

Does a massage gun help marathon recovery?

Used gently, it helps tight calves, hamstrings and quads feel looser in the days after a race. Heat modes make it far more comfortable on sore legs than percussion alone, and it should never be used hard over a possible injury.

How long does it take to recover from a marathon?

Most runners feel normal walking after three to five days and are ready for easy running in a week to ten days, with a fortnight before anything hard.

What should you not buy a marathon finisher?

Another race entry in the first week, anything requiring them to stand up, and training books. Wait until they have stopped saying never again.

Do you sell the massage gun yourselves?

No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges, prints and party decorations in the UK. Massage guns and other wellness gadgets are recommendations from elsewhere - the only things linked to our own shop are ours.
