New Year ideas: seeing it in without spending a fortune

New Year's Eve has a reputation for being the most over-planned, over-priced night of the year. Tickets cost triple, taxis cost more, and half the people out would rather be on a sofa.

The good versions are usually small: a house full of people, something to eat that isn't a buffet of crisps, a plan for midnight, and a January that starts with one realistic intention rather than five abandoned ones.

• Sort taxis or beds before anyone arrives. Booking a cab at 12.30am on 1 January is a lost cause.
• Have the TV or a livestream ready five minutes before midnight, with the volume already tested.
• Put a bin bag and a bowl of paracetamol somewhere obvious. Tomorrow-you will be grateful.

• A year-in-review quiz: ten questions about the news, ten about the people in the room.
• Predictions in a jar - everyone writes one for the year ahead, sealed and opened next New Year's Eve.
• Best and worst of the year, one each, said out loud around the room before the countdown.
• Auld Lang Syne with the words printed out, because nobody knows the second verse.
• A first-footing plan if you're marking Hogmanay - dark-haired visitor, coal, bread and a dram.
• A midnight walk outside to watch whatever fireworks the neighbours have bought.

A quiet New Year at home

• A proper meal cooked slowly, eaten late, with the phone in another room.
• A film marathon with a hard rule that nobody checks the time until 11.45pm.
• Go to bed at ten. Waking up on 1 January feeling human is genuinely underrated.
• A walk on New Year's Day morning - cold, empty streets, and the best coffee of the year.

Resolutions that actually stick

• One resolution, not five. The fifth one kills the other four.
• Make it a schedule, not a goal: 'Tuesday and Thursday swim' beats 'get fit'.
• Pick something you'd enjoy in February, not something you'd admire in January.
• Tell one person who'll ask about it, and nobody else.
• Plan for the miss - one skipped week isn't a failed year.
