New Year's Eve Party Ideas at Home: A Cocktail Night That Runs Itself
New Year's Eve at home beats paying a fortune for a ticket and queueing for a taxi in the cold. The catch is the shape of the night: it starts too early, sags around eleven, and midnight arrives with everybody sitting down.
Plan for that and it's the best party of the year. The bar carries the first half, food carries the middle, and the bells do the rest.

A bar that keeps going without you
- You can't host and pour on New Year's Eve. An automatic cocktail making machine measures and mixes a drink at the push of a button, so guests serve themselves and the host isn't stuck behind a table with a jigger all night.
- Set the bar up properly the day before. A drinks cabinet with doors and drawers is what turns a collection of bottles into a bar: bottles stay upright and out of the light, the tools hide in the drawers, and the top gives you a surface at the right height to build a drink on.
- Two signature cocktails on a card, one sparkling option, one good no-alcohol drink.
- Fizz chilling from 6pm. Warm fizz at midnight is the classic mistake.
- Ice: 1kg a head, bought that morning, kept in a cool box.
Food that has to last until 1am
- Something substantial at 9pm, not 7pm. People pace themselves badly on NYE.
- A grazing table that refills rather than one round of canapés.
