Luxury Dinner Party Ideas at Home: How to Host Like a Restaurant
Share
A luxury dinner party at home isn't about spending more. It's about the bits restaurants get right and most of us skip: a drink in people's hands within two minutes, a table that looks considered, warm low light, and a host who's actually sat down by the time the main course lands.
Get the arrival drink and the lighting right and people will tell you it felt expensive before they've eaten anything.
Honest note: we design and print our cards, badges, prints, candles and party decorations in the UK. The drinks cabinet and the cocktail machine are recommendations from elsewhere.

The arrival drink does the heavy lifting
- A cocktail in their hand before they've taken their coat off. An automatic cocktail making machine measures and mixes a drink at the push of a button, so guests serve themselves and the host isn't stuck behind a table with a jigger all night.
- One cocktail for everyone on arrival, not a menu. Choice slows the whole evening down.
- Something sparkling for anyone who says they're driving, in a proper glass.
- Set the drinks up away from the kitchen so guests don't gather where you're cooking.
- Keep the bottles and tools together and out of sight. A drinks cabinet with doors and drawers is what turns a collection of bottles into a bar: bottles stay upright and out of the light, the tools hide in the drawers, and the top gives you a surface at the right height to build a drink on.
A table that reads as expensive
- Low candles only. Anything above eye level and people talk round it, not across it.
- One long runner beats a cloth you'll worry about all night.
- Two glasses per person, water in a jug, no bottles lined up like a bar.
- Cloth napkins, even cheap ones. It's the single biggest upgrade for the money.
- A hand-written place card at each seat - Shop the range
A menu you can actually cook
- Starter cold and plated in advance. It buys you twenty minutes.
- One slow-cooked main that improves while it waits. Never something that needs timing to the minute.
- Two sides, both able to sit in a warm oven.
- Dessert bought or made the day before. Nobody has ever complained about a good tart.
- Cheese after pudding, British, three types, on a board you leave out.
Lighting, sound and the feel of the room
- Turn the big light off before the first guest arrives and don't turn it back on.
- Lamps in corners, candles on the table, nothing overhead.
- Scented candles in the hallway and bathroom, unscented near the food - Shop the range
- A three-hour playlist chosen before anyone arrives, sitting under the conversation.
- One print or piece of art lit properly beats five that aren't - Shop the range
The running order
- 7.30pm arrivals, cocktail at the door, something salty to pick at.
- 8.15pm sit down, starter already on the table.
- 9.00pm main, wine poured by whoever's nearest, not you.
- 10.00pm pudding, then cheese out and left there.
- 11.00pm move to the sofas. The table empties itself once one person stands up.
Small touches guests remember
- A printed menu card on the table, even for four people.
- A digestif nobody expected, poured after pudding.
- A thank-you card posted to whoever brought something - Shop the range
- Coffee properly made, not instant, at the end.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a dinner party at home feel luxurious?
Three things do almost all of it: a proper cocktail handed over on arrival, low warm light with candles at table height, and a menu where everything but the main is finished before guests arrive. The cost of the food matters far less than the timing.
How many courses should a dinner party have?
Three is the sweet spot for six to eight people: a cold starter, one slow main with two sides, and a pudding made the day before. Add cheese if you want a fourth without any extra cooking.
What cocktails work best before dinner?
Something short, dry and not too sweet: a negroni, a martini, a whisky sour or a spritz if it's summer. Serve one cocktail to everybody rather than taking orders, or you'll spend the first half hour mixing.
How far ahead should you prep for a dinner party?
Shop two days before, cook the pudding the day before, plate the starter in the afternoon, and have the main in the oven an hour before the first knock. Lay the table before you shower, not after.
Do you sell the drinks cabinet or the cocktail machine?
No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges, prints, candles and party decorations in the UK. The cabinet and the automatic cocktail maker are recommendations from elsewhere - only the things linked to our own shop are ours.
