Alternative Office Christmas Party Themes To Get The Whole Team Talking

Tired of the same office Christmas party every year? Try a theme that gets people talking. Our favourite is a Castle Mystery: the games master wears a hooded Traitors cloak, secret Traitors are chosen, and the whole team votes at a round table.

Some of the things we suggest here, including the official Traitors cloak, are sold by other shops, not by us. Where we link to them, we say so.

Castle Mystery (Traitors-style)

This dramatic theme suits outgoing teams who love a bit of friendly deception and suspense. It is perfect for a full-evening event where you want everyone to mingle naturally. For the best experience, assign a confident organiser to act as host and keep the suspense building throughout the night.

• Games master in the official Traitors cloak runs the evening.
• Hand out secret roles at the door.
• Mix teams across departments for missions.
• Hold a round table vote before dessert.

Other interactive themes

Ideal for highly collaborative offices, these hands-on activities work brilliantly when you want to break the ice between different departments. They are best scheduled before the drinks flow too freely so everyone can focus. A helpful tip is to test any game instructions well in advance of the party.

• Christmas quiz night with team names.
• Casino night with fun money.
• Murder mystery dinner.
• Escape room in a box.

Dress-up themes

Great for creative teams who love taking photos, a themed dress code is a brilliant way to mark a formal end-of-year celebration. It works best for evening events with a photobooth. To encourage participation, make sure you send out the dress requirements at least a month beforehand so guests have time to prepare.

• 80s or 90s throwback.
• Christmas jumpers with a prize for the worst.
• Black tie and tinsel.
• Hollywood glamour.

Low-key ideas

These relaxed options suit smaller, close-knit teams looking for a cosy and budget-friendly celebration. They are perfect for afternoon gatherings during the final week of work before the Christmas holidays. To keep things stress-free, ask everyone to help with the tidying up so the organising duties do not fall on just one person.

• Secret Santa with a price limit.
• Christmas crafts and mulled wine.
• Festive bake-off.

Key things to remember

• Offer good soft drinks.
• Keep games optional.
• Send the theme out early so people can plan.
