How To Recreate A Pottery Cafe Date Night At Home

Pottery painting is a very good date because it removes the hardest part of a date - working out where to look. You're both busy, side by side, and the conversation happens on its own.

The studios are lovely and they're also thirty pounds a head before the coffee. Here's the home version.

What it costs, honestly

• Studio: roughly £8-£15 studio fee each, plus £12-£30 for the piece, plus a week's wait for the kiln. Two people, easily £60.
• At home: a paint-your-own mug kit covers both of you for around £10-£15, everything included.
• Add £5 for a decent bottle of something and you have a whole evening for under twenty pounds.
• The studio wins on the fired glaze and the finish. Home wins on price, timing, music and being able to start again badly.
• If you love it, do the studio for anniversaries and the kit for ordinary Tuesdays.

Setting the night up

• Clear the table completely first. Half a table is not enough and you'll discover that with wet paint in hand.
• One tray each so the mess has a boundary and nobody blames anybody.
• Proper lighting. Painting under a dim pendant is how you get two muddy brown mugs.
• A playlist you both like and no television. The whole point is the talking.
• Food that doesn't need cutting up - a sharing board beside the trays works, a curry doesn't.
• Phones in the other room. You'll take photos at the end anyway.

What to paint

• Paint one for each other rather than one each. You keep whatever they make of you, warts and all.
• The place you first met, drawn extremely badly. This is the best version of this game.
• Matching mugs with one inside joke split across the pair.
• An honest portrait of the other person, five minutes, no rubbing out.
• A date and a tiny drawing on the base, which turns it into a keepsake rather than a mug.
• For a first attempt, stick to two colours. Enthusiasm plus six colours equals brown.

Finishing and looking after it

• Follow the kit's own instructions - most air-dry, some want a low oven bake to set the paint.
• Leave it longer than the box says. Twenty-four hours is safer than eight.
• Hand wash anything painted at home. Dishwashers strip home-set paint within weeks.
• Keep the paint away from the rim and the inside of the mug, where lips and tea go.
• If it goes badly, that's part of it. The ugly mug is the one you'll both use.
