Seasonal decor without the clutter

Seasonal decorating turns into clutter when it's additive - every year a bit more comes out and nothing goes away.

The fix is to swap rather than add: one shelf, one surface, one wall, changed four times a year.

We don't sell furniture - we make prints, postcards, pin badges and cards in house, printed in the UK. So this is a straight guide, plus the print and the card that go with it.

The swap, not add, rule

• Choose one shelf or mantelpiece as the seasonal spot and change only that.
• Whatever goes up, something comes down and goes in the same box.
• Swap prints in existing frames rather than buying new decorations.
• Change the cushion covers and the throw - that's the whole living room done.
• One scent per season does more than any amount of ornaments.

Season by season, cheaply

• Spring: branches in a jug, bulbs in pots, lighter throw, windows open.
• Summer: clear the surfaces right down, swap to linen, cut greenery from the garden.
• Autumn: warmer lamps on earlier, a heavier throw, conkers and leaves if there are children in the house.
• Winter: candles, one string of warm lights left up until February, and a deeper cushion colour.
• Christmas: a tree and one other thing. The tree is enough.

Storing it so it survives

• One labelled box per season, and it has to close. If it doesn't close, something goes.
• Wrap baubles in kitchen roll rather than buying dividers.
• Photograph the setup before you pack it, so next year takes ten minutes.
• Throw out anything broken at packing time, not unpacking time.
• Keep the lights in the box with the tree, not with the general electricals.

What to skip

• Anything single-use and plastic that only works for one week a year.
• Themed crockery that lives in the loft for eleven months.
• Door wreaths in three different styles. One good one lasts a decade.
• Scented candles you don't like the smell of, bought because they matched.
• Decorations bought in the January sales for a house you might not be in.
