Creative Digital Scrapbooking: How To Archive Your Family Photos

There are around 4,000 photographs on the average British phone and almost none of them are ever looked at twice. Digital scrapbooking is simply the act of rescuing the good ones.

The hard part is not the design. It is getting photos out of the phone, sorted and backed up in a way you will still understand in ten years.

Step one: get them off the phone

• Pick one home - iCloud, Google Photos or a folder structure on a computer - and use only that one.
• Sort into folders by year, then by event. Resist any cleverer system.
• Delete ruthlessly. Three near-identical shots become one.

• Back up to a second place before you touch anything else.

Step two: choose your tools

• Canva for easy, template-led layouts.
• Affinity Publisher or Adobe InDesign if you want full control over a printed book.
• Apple Photos or Google Photos for automatic albums you barely have to build.
• Photobook services like Blurb, Bob Books or Photobox for the finished object.
• Keep the original photo files separate from the layout files.

Step three: layouts that work

• One story per spread - a holiday, a birthday, a first day at school.
• Leave white space. Twelve photos on a page is a collage, not a page.
• Write captions with names, dates and places. In twenty years those are the valuable part.
• Mix in scans of tickets, cards and drawings, not just photographs.

Step four: print and protect

• A printed photobook costs roughly GBP 25 to GBP 60 in the UK depending on size and paper.
• Print your five best images large for the wall rather than burying them in a book.
• Keep the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two formats, one off-site.
