How To Send Off A Retiring GP: Farewell Party Ideas And Keepsakes
Share
A GP who has been at the same practice for decades has delivered babies who now bring their own children in. That is worth marking properly, and a whip-round card signed in biro at the front desk is not it.
This is how practices actually organise a good send-off: one person running it, a group gift with a deadline, and something the patients can sign too.
Honest note: we print the cards, prints and decorations in the UK. The bobblehead is a recommendation from elsewhere.

The group gift from the practice
- A custom bobblehead of the doctor, made from a practice photo. A custom bobblehead made from a photo is the one gift on this list that nobody already owns. You send a couple of clear photos, it comes back as a small figure in scrubs or a white coat, and it ends up on a desk or a locker shelf for years.
- An engraved carriage clock still lands, if that is the culture of the practice.
- A garden bench or a tree for the practice grounds, with a small plaque.
- A hamper aimed at the retirement, not the job: good coffee, wine, something to take on the first proper holiday.
- Vouchers for the hobby they have talked about for ten years and never had a Saturday for.
Running the whip-round without it getting awkward
- One organiser, one deadline, one envelope. Two people collecting is how money goes missing.
- Set a suggested amount - GBP 10 from reception and admin, GBP 20 upward from partners.
- Make it clear that contributing is optional and the card is not.
- Buy the gift a month out so it arrives before the last day, not after.
- If it is handmade, allow longer. Order it three to four weeks ahead. It is handmade from your photo, so it is not a next-day buy.
Letting the patients say goodbye
- A large signing card on the reception desk for the final fortnight - Shop the range
- A book of messages, with a note asking for one line and a first name only.
- A notice in the waiting room a month ahead so people know it is coming.
- A framed print of the surgery building, signed round the mount - Shop the range
- A small thank you display of photos from across the decades.
The party itself
- A lunchtime in the practice with the phones diverted beats an evening nobody can get to.
- Bunting and banners that do not look like a child's birthday - Shop the range
- One short speech from a partner and one from the longest-serving receptionist.
- A photo board of the practice through the years, borrowed from everyone's phones.
- Keep the speeches to ten minutes total. Everyone is back on clinic at two.
What to write in the card
- "Thirty years, three waiting rooms and two computer systems. The practice will not be the same."
- "Thank you for every appointment that ran over because you actually listened."
- "You have looked after three generations of my family. Enjoy looking after yourself now."
- "Happy retirement, Doctor. The bleep is somebody else's problem from Monday."
- "From all of us at the surgery - with thanks for the lot of it."

Frequently asked questions
What is a good retirement gift for a GP?
A group-funded keepsake works best: a custom figure or portrait, an engraved piece, or a bench or tree at the practice. Pair it with a card the patients have signed.
How much should a practice spend on a retirement gift?
Most practices land between GBP 150 and GBP 400 for a long-serving GP, collected as GBP 10 to GBP 25 per person with one organiser and one deadline.
Can patients contribute to a GP's retirement gift?
Money from patients gets complicated, so most practices take signatures instead. A large signing card or a message book on reception for a fortnight is the usual approach.
What do you write in a GP's retirement card?
Name the length of service and one specific thing they did. "Thirty years and you never once made me feel like I was wasting your time" beats any generic line.
Do you make the bobbleheads yourselves?
No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges, prints, candles and party decorations in the UK. The custom bobblehead is a recommendation from elsewhere - only the things linked to our own shop are ours.
