NHS Doctor Leaving Present Ideas For The End Of A Rotation
Share
Rotations mean the same farewell every few months: a card in the doctors' mess, a collection in a tin, and somebody buying a gift at nine the night before.
It works better with a small system. One person, a modest budget, and a gift that travels to the next hospital in a suitcase.
Honest note: we print the cards and prints in the UK. The bobblehead is a recommendation from elsewhere.

Team-funded gifts that travel
- A photo-matched bobblehead of them in scrubs. A custom bobblehead made from a photo is the one gift on this list that nobody already owns. You send a couple of clear photos, it comes back as a small figure in scrubs or a white coat, and it ends up on a desk or a locker shelf for years.
- An engraved stethoscope tag or pen with the department name on it.
- A good insulated flask, used every single shift at the next place.
- A framed photo of the team, which is the thing they will not think to take.
- A voucher for the city they are moving to, not this one.
Organising the collection
- GBP 5 to GBP 10 a head across a department gets you a proper gift without anyone feeling squeezed.
- One organiser, one message in the group chat, one deadline two weeks out.
- Include the nursing team and ward clerks in the card, not just the medics.
- Order early if it is personalised - the last week always runs out of time.
- Order it three to four weeks ahead. It is handmade from your photo, so it is not a next-day buy.
The card, which is the bit they keep
- A big card left in the mess for a fortnight so night shifts get to sign it - Shop the range
- Ask people for one specific memory rather than "good luck".
- A leaving card that is funny about the department, not about the patients - Shop the range
- Add a pin badge for the lanyard that marks the rotation - Shop the range
- Leaving do ideas - Read the guide
What to write
- "Four months and you never once left a job for the night team. That is the highest praise here."
- "Thanks for every time you answered the bleep first. Good luck at the next one."
- "The ward will be quieter and considerably worse off. Go well."
- "You made a horrible winter bearable. Come back and visit."
- "From all of us on the ward - doctors, nurses and the coffee machine."
What not to buy
- Anything big. They are moving hospital and possibly city.
- Anything perishable, unless it is eaten on the last shift.
- Department-branded mugs, of which they already own four.
- Alcohol, unless you actually know they drink.
- Anything that needs a wall to hang on in accommodation that does not allow nails.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good leaving present for a doctor?
Something suitcase-sized and personal: a custom keepsake, an engraved stethoscope tag, a good flask, or a framed team photo. Rotating doctors cannot carry bulky gifts.
How much do you collect for a doctor leaving a rotation?
GBP 5 to GBP 10 per person is standard, which usually gets a department to GBP 60 to GBP 150 - enough for one good keepsake and a card.
What do you write in a leaving card for a doctor?
One specific thing they did, then the good wishes. "You never left a job for the night team" means far more than "good luck for the future".
Do you make the bobbleheads yourselves?
No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges, prints, candles and party decorations in the UK. The custom bobblehead is a recommendation from elsewhere - only the things linked to our own shop are ours.
