Start with the base layer

• A hay or straw bale either side of the door - cheap from a garden centre or farm shop, and it does most of the work.
• A doormat you don't mind ruining, because October will ruin it.
• Two large pots of something seasonal: chrysanthemums, ornamental cabbage, heather.
• A wooden crate or an old stool to give the display different heights.
• Odd numbers look better than even. Three pumpkins, not four.

Autumn foliage that lasts

• Eucalyptus, dried hydrangea and bracken all hold up in British weather.
• A door wreath in oranges, rusts and deep reds rather than bright plastic orange.
• Trailing ivy down the sides of the bales - free from most hedges.
