How To Organise A Halloween Pumpkin Trail On Your Street

A pumpkin trail is the gentlest version of Halloween: houses put a carved lantern in the window, children walk the street spotting them, and nobody knocks on a door.

It suits small children, nervous ones, and neighbours who'd rather not answer the bell all evening.

Getting the street on board

• Start three weeks out. People need time to buy a pumpkin.
• A note through doors beats a group chat - it reaches the households who aren't online.
• Say exactly what taking part means: one carved pumpkin in the front window on the night, lit from 5pm. Nothing else.
• Make clear there's no knocking and no sweets needed - that's what gets the reluctant neighbours in.
• Ask people to text or reply so you know which house numbers are taking part.

Give it a theme

• A letter each, so the trail spells a word when the children write them down.
• A number each, hidden in the carving, adding up to a total.
• Animals, or films, or one design per house with a spotting sheet.
• A theme turns a walk into a game, which is what keeps the six-year-olds going to the end of the road.
