Safe Pumpkin Carving For Kids: A Parent's Guide To Injury-Free Fun

Pumpkin carving sends a steady stream of people to A&E every October, and it's almost always the same cause: a long kitchen knife that sticks in the flesh and then comes free all at once.

Here's how to run it so the children do the fun parts and nobody gets hurt.

Why kitchen knives cause the injuries

• A long smooth blade needs force to push through a pumpkin wall, and force plus a slippery surface is how hands get cut.
• The blade gets stuck, someone wiggles it hard, and it comes free towards them.
• Short serrated carving saws cut with a sawing motion instead of a push, so there's no force to slip with.
• They're also too small and blunt-tipped to do much damage if they do slip - which is why they're the right tool for children.
• The specialised tools in a proper carving kit are sturdier than a kitchen knife for this job, and far safer in small hands.

Who does what, by age

• Under 5: drawing the face on with a marker pen, pulling the insides out, separating the seeds.
• 5 to 8: scooping with a metal spoon, poking drill holes through the skin, pushing pre-cut pieces out.
• 8 to 12: sawing along their own drawn lines with a small carving saw, with an adult at the table.
• 12 and up: the whole thing, including the lid, still supervised.
• Adults only: the first cut through a hard pumpkin top, and anything involving a kitchen knife.

Set the table up safely

• Dry hands, dry tools, dry table. Wet is how everything slips.
• Always cut away from the body, never towards a hand holding the pumpkin steady.
• Put the pumpkin on a folded tea towel so it can't slide.
• One person carving at a time per pumpkin - no holding it steady for someone else.
• Good light. Most slips happen because nobody could see the line.

No-carve options for little ones

• Paint the face on with acrylic or poster paint.
• Stick-on felt shapes for eyes and mouths.
• Drill holes only, in a pattern, and light it from inside - it looks brilliant and needs no blade at all.
• Marker pen faces, which children can do entirely alone.
• Decorate a small pumpkin each while the adults carve the big one.

Lighting them safely

• Battery tea lights, not real ones, if the pumpkin will be near a door, a costume or a child.
• A real candle needs a hole cut in the lid so heat can escape.
• Never leave a lit pumpkin unattended, and never inside on a windowsill with curtains.
• Kids' costumes catch fire easily - keep lanterns off the path where children walk.

If someone does get cut

• Rinse it, press a clean cloth on it firmly and hold for ten minutes.
• Still bleeding after ten minutes of pressure, or the cut is deep or gaping: go to urgent care.
• Any loss of feeling or movement in a finger needs to be seen the same day.
• Call 111 if you're not sure. Pumpkin injuries are common enough that they'll know exactly what you mean.
