A thank you card only has to do two things: name what they gave, and say what happened next. That second half is the bit most people skip, and it is the bit that lands.

How to write it so it lands

  • Name the actual gift. "Thank you for the present" reads like a form letter.
  • Say what happened next: where it lives, what you bought, what it saved you.

How soon should you send a thank you card?

Within two weeks is the usual guide. For weddings, up to three months is normal and nobody minds.

Is it rude to mention money directly?

Say "your generous gift" rather than the amount. Then say what it is going towards - that is the warm bit.
