Key events of the 1980s
- Unemployment passes three million in 1982.
- The Falklands War, April to June 1982.
- The miners' strike, March 1984 to March 1985.
- Live Aid at Wembley and Philadelphia in July 1985.
- The Big Bang deregulates the City in October 1986; Black Monday follows in October 1987.
- The Hillsborough disaster in April 1989 kills 97 Liverpool supporters.
Politics and government
- Thatcher wins three elections: 1979, 1983 and 1987.
- Council houses are sold under Right to Buy; gas, BT and British Airways are privatised.
- The SDP splits from Labour in 1981 and allies with the Liberals.
- Section 28 passes in 1988 and is not repealed until 2000 in Scotland and 2003 elsewhere.
- The poll tax is announced, riots follow in 1990, and it helps end her premiership.
Social change: rights, work and family life
- Right to Buy from 1980 sold over a million council homes and shrank the social housing stock.
- Deindustrialisation and the 1984-85 miners' strike broke the economy of whole coalfield towns.
- Section 28 (1988) banned the 'promotion' of homosexuality by councils and schools.
- The 1981 riots in Brixton, Toxteth and elsewhere led to the Scarman Report on policing and race.
- AIDS and the 1986 'Don't Die of Ignorance' campaign changed public health messaging for good.
Culture and entertainment
- Channel 4 launches in 1982; EastEnders in 1985; satellite television from 1989.
- New romantics, synth pop, then acid house and the second summer of love in 1988.
- The Smiths, Madness, Culture Club and Stock Aitken Waterman.
- Home computers: the ZX Spectrum, the Commodore 64 and the BBC Micro in schools.
- The video recorder makes television something you could keep.

- Share ownership and home ownership both rise sharply, and so does household debt.
- AIDS awareness campaigns - the 'Don't Die of Ignorance' leaflet through every door in 1987.
- The Great Storm of October 1987 fells 15 million trees.
- Out-of-town shopping centres open and town centres start to thin out.
