A night in beats a restaurant more often than people admit: no booking, no taxi, no rushing the food. It only fails when it turns into an ordinary evening with a card propped against the salt.

Making it feel like an occasion
- Lay the table properly, even if it's the kitchen one.
- Phones in another room, both of you, agreed in advance.
- Candles lit before either of you sits down.
- Something to drink that you wouldn't buy on an ordinary week.
- The wedding playlist, or the album from the year you met.
- Tidy the room you'll be in. It sounds trivial and it isn't.
What to cook
- The wedding breakfast, recreated badly - reliably the funniest option.
- The first meal you ever cooked for each other.
- Something that takes three hours, done together with a drink.
- A proper starter, main and pudding, which is what makes it feel unlike a normal night.
- Or don't cook: a takeaway on good plates still counts if the rest is set up.
With children in the house
- Eat late, after bedtime, and accept that it starts at half eight.
- Do a version of it at lunchtime, with the children in on it.
- Ask someone to take them for a few hours rather than a whole night.
- Keep it low effort and low stakes; a tired argument about a soufflé helps nobody.
- Get the photo of the two of you anyway. You'll have almost none from these years.
