• A bulb kit for March daffodils or December narcissus, planted with them rather than for them.
• A birthstone-colour scarf, mug or notebook, which does the job without pretending to be jewellery.
• A small pressed-flower keepsake, best for a milestone birthday rather than a normal one.

£30 and up

• Birthstone jewellery: a pendant or stud earrings in the month's stone or a lab-grown version of it.
• A framed set of prints, one flower per family member, which is the version people keep.
• A real plant of the flower where it grows in the UK - a rose for June, a peony for November.
• A florist bouquet built round the birth flower, ordered by name so they don't substitute it.

What to avoid

• Cut flowers alone for someone who travels or works away - they die before they get seen.
• Anything with the meaning printed on it in a script font. Say it in the card instead.
• Lily of the valley or anything lily-family in a house with cats. It's genuinely dangerous to them.
• Diamond-month gifts that strain the budget. Nobody expects April to be expensive.
