Communion quiz questions for the party afterwards

The service is short, the party afterwards is not. A ten-minute quiz between the buffet and the cake gives the day a shape and stops the children disappearing upstairs.

Pitch it so the child of the day can win a round. Mixed teams of one adult and two children work better than adults against kids.

Round one: the child of the day (ask the family first)

• What is their full name, including middle names?
• Which church were they baptised in?
• Who are their godparents?
• What did they choose to wear today?
• How old were they at their christening?

• How many people came to their christening?

Round two: the church round, kids' level

• What is the bread called at Communion? (The host)
• What colour is a priest's vestment at Easter? (White or gold)
• What do you call the cup used at Communion? (Chalice)
• How many candles are usually on the altar? (Two)
• What is the book of readings called? (The lectionary)
• What word do you say after 'The Body of Christ'? (Amen)
• What is the first sacrament? (Baptism)
• What comes after First Holy Communion? (Confirmation)
• What is the priest's chair area called? (The sanctuary)
• What day of the week is Mass usually on? (Sunday)

Round three: family round for the adults

• Which year did the grandparents marry?
• Who in this room has been to the most christenings?
• Whose christening photo is on the wall at Nan's?
• Which relative travelled furthest today?
• Who cried first at the service?
• How many first cousins does the child have?
• Which family member has the most middle names?
• Who took the most photographs today - phones out, count them?
• What was the traditional christening gift in this family?
• Who is on cake duty?

Round four: the picture round

• Baby photos of five adults in the room - name each one.
• Five churches, including today's - which is which?
• Close-ups of five things from the buffet table.
• Five family christening photos across the decades, put in order.
• Five cake photos - guess which one is today's.

How to run it in ten minutes

• Print the answer sheets. Nobody wants to hunt for paper mid-party.
• One question-master, no microphone: stand by the cake table and speak up.
• Teams of three, mixed ages, named by the children.
• Read each question twice, then move on regardless.
• Swap sheets to mark, so nobody grades their own team.
• Prizes: a badge each for the winning children, a bottle for the adults.
