Gifts For Police Officers UK: Practical Ideas They Will Actually Use

Buying for someone in the job is harder than it looks: half the obvious ideas are already issued, and the other half are mugs with 'World's Best Copper' on them.

We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges and prints in the UK. We don't sell uniform, kit or equipment, so anything gear-related here is a recommendation rather than our own product.

Everything below is either used on shift or used to recover from one, grouped by budget.

Under £20

  • Good boot socks, merino if you can stretch to it. Nothing on this list gets used more.
  • A boot care kit: polish, brushes, a cloth and a tin of dubbin.
  • A pocket notebook and pens that write on wet paper.
  • A silicone-sealed food container that actually survives being thrown in a bag.
  • A card saying thank you or well done, written properly. It ends up in a drawer and stays there for years.
  • A pin badge for the lapel of civilian clothes - small, personal, not job-branded.

£20 to £60

  • A heavy-duty kit bag. The biggest single upgrade to daily life in the job: boots, layers, food and paperwork in one bag that doesn't split at the seam.
  • A quality vacuum flask that keeps a drink hot for a full shift.
  • Blackout blinds or a proper sleep mask and ear plugs for night-shift weeks.
  • A car boot organiser and a decent seat protector.
  • A wallet or card holder that fits in a uniform pocket.
  • A powerful pocket torch for off-duty use, separate from the issued one.

£60 and up

  • A watch that's readable at a glance and survives being knocked.
  • A weighted blanket or a decent mattress topper, which sounds odd and helps hugely with shift sleep.
  • Noise-cancelling headphones for sleeping in the day and commuting at night.
  • A massage, a spa day or a physio session. Stab vests and long shifts wreck backs.
  • A short break booked around their rota rather than yours.

What to avoid

  • Novelty mugs, 'police line do not cross' tape and plastic handcuffs. All of it has been done.
  • Anything with a force crest, which is restricted and often unwelcome.
  • Belt kit, torches or armour that must be force-approved.
  • Strong scents, which are noticeable in a car with three other people for ten hours.
  • Anything that assumes they can take a specific date off. Rotas are set months ahead.

How to write it so it lands

  • Ask their rota before booking anything with a date attached.
  • Two of anything wearable - socks, gloves, base layers - beats one of something fancy.
  • A card with a specific thank you in it outlasts any gift on this list.

Frequently asked questions

What are good gifts for police officers in the UK?

Practical shift kit: a heavy-duty kit bag, a proper flask, merino boot socks, a boot care set, a sealed food container, plus sleep kit like blackout blinds and ear plugs for night weeks.

What should you not buy a police officer?

Novelty mugs and handcuff gifts, anything bearing a force crest, and any belt or body kit that has to be force-approved. Strong scents are also a no in a shared car.

What's a good cheap gift for a police officer?

Under £20: good boot socks, a boot care kit, a weatherproof notebook and pens, a decent food container, or a thank you card written properly.

What helps an officer working night shifts?

Blackout blinds, a sleep mask, ear plugs, noise-cancelling headphones and a slow cooker for meals at odd hours. Sleep is the thing shift work takes first.

Do you sell police kit or uniform?

No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges and prints in the UK. Any bag or equipment mentioned here is an outside recommendation, not something we stock.
