What To Pack In A Police Duty Bag: UK Officer Essentials
Share
Twelve hours is a long time to be out with the wrong kit. Every officer refines their bag over the first year, usually after being cold, wet or hungry once each.
We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges and prints in the UK. We don't sell uniform, kit or equipment, so anything gear-related here is a recommendation rather than our own product.
Here's a sensible starting list, how to organise it so you can find things in the dark, and what to look for in the bag itself.

Choosing the bag
- A heavy-duty kit bag with a wide opening, so you can see everything without unpacking it on a station floor.
- A reinforced base - the bag lives in car boots and on wet ground.
- A separate compartment for boots and wet kit, so muddy gear stays away from clean layers.
- Big enough for a change of clothes, a wet weather layer, food and paperwork, but small enough for a station locker.
- A padded shoulder strap plus grab handles. You'll carry it loaded across a car park in the rain most days.
- Plain black or navy. Nothing that advertises the job on the commute.
The core kit list
- Spare socks, at least two pairs. The one item every officer wishes they had more of.
- A warm base layer and a hat, in the bag from September to May regardless of the forecast.
- Waterproof over-trousers and a packable jacket.
- Food for a full shift plus something that keeps: nuts, cereal bars, anything that survives a week in a bag.
- A flask and a separate water bottle.
- A pocket torch and spare batteries, in addition to the issued one.
- Notebook, pens, a permanent marker and a clipboard or a folder for paperwork.
- Phone charger, a power bank and a cable that isn't already broken.
The bits people forget
- Blister plasters, painkillers, and any personal medication in date.
- Hand sanitiser, wet wipes and a roll of bin bags for wet or contaminated kit.
- Spare gloves, and a spare set of boot laces.
- A clean t-shirt for the drive home, and a towel.
- Chewing gum, deodorant and a toothbrush for a shift that overruns into a court appearance.
- A small amount of cash, for machines that don't take cards.
- Sun cream in summer. Standing in a road for six hours in July is a real risk.
How to organise it
- Use packing cubes or coloured dry bags: one for clothes, one for food, one for admin. You can then find things in a dark boot.
- Keep the things you need fast - torch, gloves, notebook - in the outer pockets, never buried.
- Keep wet and dirty kit in a separate bag inside the main bag, not loose.
- Restock at the same point each week rather than when you run out.
- Keep a second layer, a blanket and a bigger first aid kit in the car rather than the bag.
- Check the bag before nights, not before earlies. Nights are when being cold matters.

How to write it so it lands
- Weigh the packed bag once. If you dread carrying it, you'll stop carrying it.
- Write the restock list on a card and keep it in the bag.
- Two pairs of socks. It's always socks.

Frequently asked questions
What do you pack in a police duty bag?
Spare socks and a base layer, waterproofs, food and a flask for a full shift, a torch and spare batteries, notebook and pens, a charger and power bank, plus wipes, plasters and a clean shirt for the drive home.
What should you look for in a police kit bag?
A wide opening, a reinforced base, a separate compartment for boots and wet kit, a padded strap, plain colours, and a size that still fits a station locker.
How do you organise a duty bag?
Use coloured packing cubes - clothes, food, admin - keep the torch, gloves and notebook in outer pockets, bag wet kit separately, and restock on the same day each week.
What should you keep in the car rather than the bag?
A spare layer, a blanket, a bigger first aid kit, a second pair of boots and a change of clothes. The bag carries the shift; the car carries the contingency.
Do you sell police kit or uniform?
No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges and prints in the UK. Any bag or equipment mentioned here is an outside recommendation, not something we stock.
