Leaving it late is normal. The trick is knowing what the post will actually do, and choosing gifts that suit a short runway rather than gambling on a courier.
This guide covers what still works in the final fortnight, and how to make a late gift look deliberate.

Ordered on a working day, it usually goes out the same day, first class.
What still works late
- A card with a genuinely good message - late and thoughtful beats early and generic.
- Pin badges and small prints, which post as a large letter and move fast.
- A candle, wrapped as soon as it lands.
- A print they choose themselves, posted in the new year, announced in the card.
What UK post will really do
- First class usually arrives the next working day, and we post on working days, normally the same day you order.
- Second class is meant to take two working days but can take up to five, so leave room for it in December.
- Working days run Monday to Saturday, and there's no tracking on standard letter post.
- Cards, prints, badges and candles all ship together, so one order is one delivery.
If it won't arrive in time
- Send the card on its own - it arrives quicker and it's the part they read.
- Write what's coming inside the card, so the gift has an announcement rather than an apology.
- Hand over anything local yourself and save the postage.
- Don't upgrade to next day at three times the cost for something worth a tenner.
Avoiding it next year
- Buy over the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend, four weeks out.
- Keep a few blank cards in a drawer all year.
- Write the list in October and shop against it.
