Race For Life Outfit Ideas: Fun And Pink Costumes For Charity Walks

The only real rule on the day is pink, and the only real constraint is that you have to move in it for an hour or more.

So the outfits that work are layers over running kit, not costumes you have to hold up. Anything you have to carry, you'll regret by the first kilometre.

Here's what works, what to layer for a British morning, and how to make a team read as a team.

Honest note: we make cards, pin badges, prints and party decorations, not costumes. Race for Life is run by Cancer Research UK - check their site for the official kit and rules.

Pink outfits you can move in

  • A light pink jacket over your running kit: warm at the start, tied round your waist by kilometre two. A satin Pink Ladies jacket works and a whole team in them looks brilliant.
  • Pink tutu over leggings - the classic, and it weighs nothing.
  • Pink tee, pink leggings, pink socks, pink laces. Simple wins.
  • Pink wig, tinsel wig, or a pink cap if the sun's out.
  • Pink fairy wings, which are light, but check they don't catch other walkers on a narrow path.
  • Face glitter and pink ribbons in the hair, both weightless.

Team themes

  • Everyone in the same jacket or the same tutu, names printed on the back.
  • Pink Ladies, which is a jacket and nothing else to organise.
  • 80s aerobics: leotards, leg warmers, sweatbands - all pink.
  • Superheroes in pink capes.
  • One team colour plus one accessory each so people can still be themselves.
  • Group outfit planning - Read the guide

Comfort over five kilometres

  • Nothing you have to hold. Hands free the whole way.
  • No masks or full headpieces - it gets hot faster than you expect.
  • Trainers you've already worn in, never new ones.
  • Nothing that rubs at the shoulder or the waist. Test it on a walk round the block first.
  • A small belt bag or a zipped pocket for a phone and a key.
  • Sun cream even when it's grey, because you'll be out for a couple of hours with the queueing.

British weather layers

  • A jacket you can tie round your waist beats a hoodie you'll be carrying.
  • A bin bag or an old jumper for the start line, which you can leave in the donation bin.
  • A cap for rain as well as sun.
  • Dry socks and a warm top in the bag for the finish - you cool down fast.
  • Spare hair ties, plasters and safety pins in a pocket.

Tributes and back signs

  • The back sign is the bit people remember. Write the name in thick marker so it reads from behind.
  • A photo pinned to a pink tee, or a name on each team member's back.
  • Pink ribbons for anyone walking in memory of somebody.
  • Take the team photo before the start, not after - everyone looks better and the light is nicer.
  • A card for the person you're walking for, or their family - Shop the range

How to write it so it lands

  • Pink, light, and hands free.
  • Worn-in trainers, never new ones.
  • A jacket you can tie round your waist.
  • Back sign in thick marker, team photo before the start.

Frequently asked questions

What should you wear to Race for Life?

Pink, and something you can move in for 5k: a light pink jacket over running kit, a tutu over leggings, or a pink tee and leggings with pink socks and laces. Hands free the whole way.

What are good Race for Life team outfit ideas?

Everyone in the same jacket or tutu with names on the back, Pink Ladies jackets, 80s aerobics in pink, or pink capes. One team colour with one accessory each still reads as a team.

What should you avoid wearing on a charity 5k?

New trainers, masks or full headpieces, anything you have to carry, and anything that rubs at the shoulder or waist. Test the outfit on a walk round the block first.

How do you dress for British weather on the day?

A jacket you can tie round your waist, an old jumper or bin bag for the start line, a cap for rain or sun, and a dry top and socks in the bag for afterwards.

Do you sell fancy dress costumes?

No. We design and print greetings cards, enamel pin badges, prints and party decorations in the UK. Costumes are recommendations from elsewhere - the only things linked to our own shop are ours.
