Easy Teacher World Book Day Costumes That Are Comfortable
A teacher's World Book Day costume has a job list a child's doesn't: all day, playground duty, a hot classroom, bending down forty times, and being taken seriously by Year 6 at two o'clock.
Which rules out masks, long trailing fabric, face paint and anything you can't teach in.

Jacket-and-go costumes
- Frenchy or Sandy from Grease: a pink satin jacket over your own clothes, ponytail, red lip. Warm, comfortable and off in a second if the classroom's boiling.
- Where's Wally: red and white stripes, bobble hat, glasses. Every child in the building will shout your name.
- The BFG: big ears on a band, a waistcoat, an enormous handkerchief hanging out of a pocket.
- Mr Benn or Paddington: duffle coat and a hat, with a luggage label round your neck.
- Miss Trunchbull or Miss Honey, depending on the year group and your mood.
- Cat in the Hat: stripy hat and a red bow tie over anything.
Five-minute builds from your own wardrobe
- All black plus cat ears: Mog, or any black cat in any book.
- Dressing gown and a mug: the narrator of every bedtime story ever written.
- Anything tweed plus a magnifying glass: Sherlock Holmes.
- Yellow top, blue skirt: Goldilocks, with three spoons in your pocket.
- Stripy top and a beret: Madeline, or Asterix with a moustache drawn on.
- A printed sign that says "Book Character" - some teachers do this every year and the children love it.
Classroom-safe rules
- No masks - children need to see your face and so does the head.
- Nothing trailing on the floor or in a doorway.
- Hands free, always. Props get left in a drawer by 9.30 anyway.
- Warm enough for playground duty, cool enough for a classroom with thirty children in it.
- Washable, because something will be spilled on you.
- Bend test: squat down at your desk height before you leave the house.
