Everyone worries about overdoing it and then arrives to a foyer where three quarters of the room is in costume.

Sing-a-long-a nights are properly dressed up. Go for it - but pick something you can sit in for three hours, queue for a drink in, and get home on the last train in.

Here's every look, sorted by effort, plus the practical bits nobody mentions.

The easiest look in the room

• Pink Ladies. A pink satin jacket over black trousers or jeans and you are unmistakably in costume with no other effort at all.
• It's warm, it comes off if the theatre's hot, and you can wear your own clothes underneath.
• As a group, the jackets make you photograph as a set even if everyone's bottom half is different.
• Add a headscarf, red lipstick and a high ponytail if you want the full thing.

Character by character

• Sandy, good girl: yellow cardigan, full skirt, white socks, hair in a ponytail with a ribbon.
• Sandy, final scene: all black, off-the-shoulder top, red heels, big curls.
• Rizzo: red or dark dress, heels, bold lip, arms folded.
• Frenchy: pink everything and pink or auburn hair, plus a beauty school certificate if you're committing.
• Danny and the T-Birds: black leather jacket, white tee, jeans with a turn-up, hair slicked back.

No-shopping versions

The practical bits

• Theatres are hot. Layers you can take off beat one heavy costume.
• You'll be standing and dancing at your seat for a fair chunk of it, so wear shoes you can stand in.

• No full face masks, nothing that blocks the view of the person behind you, no giant headpieces.
• Props are usually fine but anything inflatable will annoy the whole row.

• Meet beforehand rather than at the door - the queue is not a good place to find six people in pink.
