Black Friday is a good week to buy the things you were already going to need: Christmas cards, birthday cards for the year ahead, small gifts and stocking fillers.

It is a bad week to buy something because the number next to it is red.

The dates

  • Black Friday is always the fourth Friday in November. In 2026 that is Friday 27 November.
  • Cyber Monday is the Monday straight after. In 2026 that is Monday 30 November.
  • The weekend between them is now treated as one long sale by most UK retailers.
  • Most UK sales start on the Monday of Black Friday week and run to midnight on Cyber Monday.
  • Royal Mail's busiest stretch starts the week after Cyber Monday, so anything ordered in the sale still moves at normal speed.

Worth buying in the sale

  • Christmas card multipacks - you know exactly how many you need, and the price only goes up in December.
  • Birthday cards in bulk for the year ahead. Write the names on the back of the envelopes as you buy them.
  • Stocking fillers under a fiver - pin badges, keyrings, small prints.
  • Prints and wall art, which are usually full price the rest of the year and cost nothing extra to post.
  • Wrapping, tags and anything you'll definitely use in the next five weeks.

Worth skipping

  • Anything personalised at a discount that still costs more than an unpersonalised card plus a decent pen.
  • Bundles that force you into designs you'd never choose - you pay for the two you want and bin the four you don't.
  • Electronics-style 'was' pricing on small gifts. Check the price history before you believe the saving.
  • Free delivery thresholds that push you £12 over to save £3.95.

How to shop it properly

  • Write the list before the sale starts - names, occasions, dates. Buy against the list, not the homepage.
  • Screenshot the normal price of anything you're watching in mid-November.
  • Check the returns window. Sale items bought in November often can't be returned in January.
  • Order small, flat items together - they usually post as one large letter.
