Black Friday is worth it for planned, repeat purchases. It is rarely worth it for one-off, emotional ones.

The dates

  • Black Friday is always the fourth Friday in November. In 2026 that is Friday 27 November.
  • Cyber Monday is the Monday straight after. In 2026 that is Monday 30 November.
  • The weekend between them is now treated as one long sale by most UK retailers.
  • Most UK sales start on the Monday of Black Friday week and run to midnight on Cyber Monday.
  • Royal Mail's busiest stretch starts the week after Cyber Monday, so anything ordered in the sale still moves at normal speed.

When it genuinely is worth it

  • You already know what you need and how many - Christmas cards being the obvious one.
  • You're buying several small things and combining postage.
  • The item never normally goes on sale. Prints and original artwork usually don't.
  • You're buying ahead for the year: birthdays, anniversaries, new babies you know are coming.

When it isn't

  • The discount only unlocks above a spend threshold you'd never otherwise hit.
  • The price was quietly raised in October. It happens more than anyone admits.
  • You're buying a gift for someone you haven't thought about yet. That's how bad presents get bought.
  • The saving is less than the return postage you'll pay if it's wrong.

How to tell a real discount from a fake one

  • Check whether the 'was' price was actually charged for a decent stretch of the year.
  • Compare the per-item price, not the bundle price.
  • Add postage before you compare anything to anything.
  • Small independent makers discount less because their margin is thinner - that's a sign of honest pricing, not a bad deal.

Is Black Friday worth it in the UK?

For planned purchases and bulk buys, yes. For one-off gifts you haven't thought about, you'll usually do better buying the right thing at full price in December.

Do small businesses discount on Black Friday?

Some do, more modestly. A maker printing their own work has less margin to give away, so a 10% offer from an independent is often a bigger real saving than 50% off inflated stock.

Is it better to wait until December?

For cards, no - November is the last calm point to buy, write and post. For bigger gifts, January sales are usually deeper.
