Adult Birthday Party At Home: A Plan That Beats Booking A Venue

Venues cost hundreds and empty at eleven. A party at home costs a fraction and lasts as long as you want it to - as long as somebody has thought about where forty coats go.

We don't sell board games. We design and print greetings cards, pin badges and party bits in the UK, so the games named here are recommendations rather than our own products.

Numbers, timings, food, games and the end of the night, in order.

Numbers, space and timings

  • Work out how many can stand in your biggest room comfortably, then invite that many. Not double.
  • Start at seven or eight. Earlier starts mean an earlier finish, which is usually a kindness.
  • Clear a room for coats and bags before anyone arrives.
  • Move furniture out, not around. Space makes a party, decor doesn't.
  • One table for drinks, one for food, at opposite ends, so people circulate.
  • Warn the neighbours, and invite them if it's that kind of street.

Food and drink that scale

  • Buffet, not plated. Two hot things, four cold, bread, and something vegetarian that isn't an afterthought.
  • Put food out an hour in, not on arrival - it paces the night.
  • One signature drink made in a jug, plus beer and wine. Don't run a cocktail bar for forty people.
  • Twice as much soft drink and water as you expect to need.
  • Ice, in quantities that feel silly.
  • Bin bags out early, glasses collected as you go, and the kitchen kept walkable.

The three games that carry an evening

  • The Traitors - the board game of the TV show. Secret traitors, round-table accusations and banishments, and it turns a room of people who half know each other into a proper evening. Best with six or more.
  • At Home Murder Mystery - a boxed kit with characters, clues and a script. One person hands out the roles, everyone arrives in loose costume, and the party plans itself around the story.
  • Hitster - pull a card, play the song, place it on your timeline by year. No reading, no rules lecture, works while people are still arriving and drinking, and the arguments about which decade a song came from run all night.
  • Between them they cover the three moods you need: a long social game, a themed centrepiece and a fast one that fills gaps.

The shape of the evening

  • First hour: arrivals, drinks, background music, no organised anything.
  • Second hour: food, and the room finding its groups.
  • Third hour: the main game, or the speeches and cake if it's that sort of birthday.
  • Fourth hour onwards: music up, games for whoever's still at the table.
  • Have a cut-off you're happy with and a last song people recognise.
  • Leave a card out for everyone to sign during the night - it beats a pile of unread ones.

How to write it so it lands

  • Move furniture out of the room, not to the edges.
  • Buy twice the ice and twice the soft drinks.
  • Decide the last song before the first guest arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How do you throw a good adult birthday party at home?

Invite as many as fit comfortably in your biggest room, clear a room for coats, move furniture out, put the drinks and food tables at opposite ends, serve buffet food an hour in, and have a game ready for the middle of the evening.

What food should you serve at an adult house party?

A buffet - two hot dishes, four cold, bread and a proper vegetarian option - put out about an hour after the start rather than on arrival.

What games work at an adult birthday party at home?

The Traitors for a long social game with a big group, an At Home Murder Mystery kit if you want a theme for the whole night, and Hitster for fast music rounds that work standing up.

What time should a house party start and finish?

Seven or eight is the usual start. Decide the finish in advance, pick a last song, and put the lights up rather than letting it fizzle out at three.

Do you sell board games or party games?

No. We design and print greetings cards, pin badges and party bits in the UK. The Traitors, At Home Murder Mystery and Hitster are outside recommendations, not products we stock.
