World Book Day lands in early March and most of us remember it the night before. Everything below is built from clothes you already own plus one prop, because that's the realistic brief.

A quick note: we don't sell costumes. This is a planning guide, and the props people usually end up buying are card, paper, a badge and a marker pen.

Schools increasingly ask for 'a book character, no shop-bought costume', which is good news - the homemade ones always win anyway.

  • Pyjamas plus a teddy: any bedtime story character.
  • White t-shirt plus felt-tip spots: any dalmatian, ladybird or Mr Men.
  • Sports kit plus a name badge: any football story character.
  • Dressing gown plus a wooden spoon: Ron Weasley, or a very tired wizard.
  • Anything plus a badge that names the character - schools accept this far more often than parents expect.

Props that make a costume look finished

  • A named badge, so nobody has to ask who they are.
  • A prop book, borrowed from the shelf and carried all day.
  • Card ears, wings or a hat - twenty minutes and a stapler.
  • Face paint for whiskers, freckles or a scar.
  • A homemade wand: a chopstick, brown paint, hot glue for texture.
  • A paper bag 'sack' for Santa, giants and burglars.

No-costume options schools accept

  • Come as your favourite reader - normal clothes, favourite book in hand.
  • Decorate a potato or jam jar as a book character instead.
  • A shoebox book scene, which is often set as the alternative homework anyway.
  • A homemade book badge with the cover drawn on it.
  • Wear a book quote written on a plain t-shirt in fabric pen.

Classroom and school ideas for teachers

  • Extreme reading photos - reading in the most unlikely place, sent in from home.
  • Masked reader: staff read a page anonymously and children guess who.
  • Book swap table so every child leaves with one they haven't read.
  • Book character parade at drop-off rather than a whole-day costume.
  • Design a new cover competition, judged with badges as prizes.
  • Guess the teacher's favourite childhood book.
  • Drop everything and read - fifteen minutes, whole school, once at 11am.

How to write it so it lands

  • Take the photo at breakfast, not at the school gate. The costume is at its best before 8:30am.
  • Write the character's name on a badge or label so teachers and other children can ask about the book.
  • Keep a 'costume box' of card, elastic, face paint and a stapler. It solves this day and every other dress-up day.
