Sympathy Hamper Ideas
Share
We make cards and prints in the UK. There is nothing to sell here beyond a sympathy card, and this guide is written to be useful rather than to sell you one.
A sympathy hamper works because it removes a decision. Nobody grieving wants to plan meals, and a box on the doorstep solves the next three days.
Build it around things that keep, need no cooking and do not need thanking for.
A sympathy card
Put a sympathy card in the top of the box, or post one a fortnight later when the visitors stop.
Food that keeps
- Soup, good bread, cheese, oatcakes, chutney.
- Tinned and jarred things that survive an unopened week.
- Something sweet: biscuits, brownies, a fruit cake.
- Fruit, which is the only thing anyone eats when they have no appetite.
The practical half
- Tea, coffee, and long-life milk. The house runs dry with visitors in and out.
- Kitchen roll, bin bags, washing-up liquid - nobody has been shopping.
- Stamps, a pen and a pack of plain notecards for the thank-yous they will have to write.
- Phone credit or a delivery voucher if they are managing a house full of people.
What to leave out
- Anything that needs an oven, a recipe or a return of the dish.
- Alcohol, unless you know them well and know it is welcome.
- Strongly scented candles and bath sets, which end up in a cupboard.
- Anything that requires a decision from them.
What to write on the card
- "No need to reply. There is food in here so you do not have to think about it."
- "Thinking of you all. I will check in again next week."
- "Leaving this on the step. I am around whenever you want company."
- Name a specific day you will call. Vague offers never get taken up.
How to write it so it lands
- Nothing that needs an oven.
- Include milk, tea and bin bags.
- Write "no need to reply" on the card.

Frequently asked questions
What do you put in a sympathy hamper?
Food that keeps and needs no cooking - soup, bread, cheese, fruit, biscuits - plus tea, coffee, milk and household basics.
Is a hamper a good sympathy gift?
Yes, because it removes decisions. Leave out anything that needs cooking, returning or thanking for.
Should you send flowers or a hamper?
Flowers suit the funeral itself; a hamper suits the week afterwards, when the visitors stop and nobody has been shopping.
